Vampires, both old and new, have the need to feed. There is no way around drinking the blood of humans. Many newly turned vampires don't survive because they can't stomach the idea of feeding off of a living person and they starve themselves. Animal blood is no substitute.
The only way to be turned into a vampire is by being drained to the edge of death and then being fed vampire blood. It's extremely painful and some die even after going through with the process.
Vampires are very fast and very strong. They can survive in sunlight but prefer the night because bright lights are harsh on their eyes. They don't age.
Control is something that has to be learned. The urge to feed is a strong and painful one and in order to restrain themselves from killing in public, they must gain control over themselves.
